Electrochemotherapy is a type of chemotherapy that allows delivery of non-permeant drugs to the interior of a cell, based on the local application of short and intense electric pulses that transiently permeabilize the cell membrane, allowing transport of molecules otherwise not permitted across it. Applications for the treatment of cutaneous and subcutaneous tumors have reached clinical use with drugs such as bleomycin or cisplatin; electrochemotherapy with bleomycin was first used to treat a patient in 1991 at the Institute Gustave Roussy in France, and electrochemotherapy with cisplatin was first used in 1995 at the Institute of Oncology in Ljubljana, Slovenia. Since then, more than four thousand patients have been treated with electrochemotherapy around the world, and new electrochemotherapy modalities have since been developed for treating internal tumors using surgical, endoscopic, or percutaneous approaches to reach the treatment area.
