Faith Healing

Historical and Premodern Treatment Practice

Faith healing is the belief and practice, found across Christianity, Islam, Buddhism and other religious traditions, that prayer, rituals such as the laying on of hands, or visits to religious shrines can bring about divine healing of disease and disability, with practitioners claiming to address conditions from blindness and deafness to cancer and HIV/AIDS. Virtually all scientists and philosophers regard it as pseudoscience, and the American Cancer Society states available scientific evidence does not support claims that it cures physical ailments, with reported recoveries generally attributed to spontaneous remission or the placebo effect. Studies show higher mortality when faith healing replaces conventional medical treatment, with documented deaths among children and adults from treatable conditions.
