Fresh Frozen Plasma Transfusion

Renal and Transfusion Therapy

Fresh frozen plasma transfusion delivers the liquid component of donated blood, separated from the red cells and platelets and frozen shortly after collection to preserve the clotting factors it carries, to patients who are bleeding because of multiple clotting factor deficiencies. It is used in conditions such as severe liver disease, massive traumatic blood loss requiring large-volume transfusion, and the urgent reversal of warfarin's anticoagulant effect, situations where several clotting factors are deficient at once rather than a single isolated factor that a more concentrated product could replace more efficiently. Fresh frozen plasma is included on the World Health Organization's List of Essential Medicines for its role in managing serious bleeding in trauma and surgical care.
