Management of Scoliosis

Physical Rehabilitation Therapy

The management of scoliosis is complex and depends primarily on the type of scoliosis involved, whether syndromic, congenital, neuromuscular or idiopathic. For idiopathic scoliosis, treatment choices are shaped in part by the severity of the spinal curvature and by skeletal maturity, which together help predict whether the curve is likely to progress. Historically, treatment options have been categorized as observation, bracing, specialized physical therapy, or surgery, with non-surgical treatment recommended to begin early since results are best when therapy starts at smaller curve angles before more structural changes occur in the spine.
