The McKenzie method is a technique used primarily in physical therapy for assessing, diagnosing, and treating problems of the spine and extremities. It was developed in the late 1950s by New Zealand physiotherapist Robin McKenzie, who launched the approach formally in 1981 under the name Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy, or MDT. Rather than grouping patients by anatomical diagnosis, MDT instead subgroups patients complaints according to how they clinically present, encompassing assessment, diagnosis, and treatment within a single system.
