Mumps Vaccine

Mumps vaccines are vaccines which prevent mumps, requiring two doses for long-term protection, with the initial dose recommended between 12 and 18 months of age and the second typically given between two and six years of age. When 90 percent of a population is vaccinated, effectiveness is estimated at 85 percent, and most of the developed world and many developing countries include it in their immunization programs, often combined with measles and rubella vaccine as the MMR vaccine, or with varicella vaccine as MMRV. As of 2005, 110 countries provided the vaccine as part of their immunization programs, and in areas of widespread vaccination it has resulted in a decline of more than 90 percent in rates of disease.
