Rheopheresis is a therapeutic apheresis process that changes the viscosity of the blood by filtering it to remove selected large components such as fibrinogen, alpha-2-macroglobulin, von Willebrand factor, LDL cholesterol and immunoglobulin M. Lowering the concentration of these components reduces blood viscosity, and the technique is used to improve microcirculation in conditions where thickened blood impairs blood flow.
