A sciatic nerve block is a regional anesthesia procedure that uses local anesthetic to numb the leg by targeting the sciatic nerve, most often where it passes through the gluteus maximus muscle, for surgery at or below the knee. Where the nerve divides into the tibial and common peroneal branches at the popliteal fossa, a popliteal block can be used instead for surgery on the ankle, Achilles tendon, or foot.
