Rheopheresis

Renal and Transfusion Therapy

Rheopheresis is a therapeutic apheresis process that changes the viscosity of the blood by filtering it to remove selected large components such as fibrinogen, alpha-2-macroglobulin, von Willebrand factor, LDL cholesterol and immunoglobulin M. Lowering the concentration of these components reduces blood viscosity, and the technique is used to improve microcirculation in conditions where thickened blood impairs blood flow.

FAQs

What did the MIRA-1 trial find about rheopheresis for macular degeneration?

In its preliminary final analysis, the MIRA-1 trial reported no statistically significant vision difference between rheopheresis and sham treatment.

The MIRA-1 trial, a randomized trial of rheopheresis for age-related macular degeneration, did not find a statistically significant vision benefit in its preliminary analysis of the final data. According to that analysis, patients with nonexudative age-related macular degeneration and certain hemorheologic abnormalities were randomized to rheopheresis or sham treatment. At 12 months, 104 treated patients and 63 placebo patients had follow-up, and both groups showed a logMAR vision improvement of 0.02, which the authors reported as not statistically significant.
