Stereotactic body radiotherapy, also called stereotactic body radiation therapy or SBRT, is a type of external radiation therapy that uses specialized equipment to position a patient precisely and deliver a high dose of radiation directly to a tumor. The total radiation dose is divided into a small number of large doses given over several days rather than the many smaller doses used in conventional radiotherapy. Sub-millimeter targeting accuracy is achieved with skull-mounted frames or thermoplastic masks combined with precise imaging systems, and the technique is used to treat cancers including small cell and non-small-cell lung cancer, sarcomas, and tumors that have spread to the lungs or liver.
