Tamagozake

Historical and Premodern Treatment Practice

Tamagozake is a Japanese alcoholic drink made of heated sake, sugar, and a raw egg, prepared by mixing raw egg yolk and honey or sugar into about three-quarters of a cup of heated sake and serving it hot. In Japan it is consumed as a folk remedy for the common cold, a practice that originated at a time when eggs were expensive and prized for their high nutritional value.
