Therapeutic hypothermia, now more often called targeted temperature management, is an active treatment that seeks to achieve and hold a patient's body at a specific temperature for a set period of time, in an effort to improve outcomes during recovery from an interruption of blood flow to the brain. It is used in an attempt to limit tissue injury following a period of poor blood flow, such as after a cardiac arrest or a stroke caused by a blocked artery.
