Fluid Replacement

Perioperative and Anesthetic Care

Fluid replacement, or fluid resuscitation, is the medical practice of replenishing bodily fluid lost through sweating, bleeding, fluid shifts or other pathologic processes. Fluids can be replaced through oral rehydration therapy by drinking, through intravenous therapy, rectally as with a Murphy drip, or through hypodermoclysis, the direct injection of fluid into the subcutaneous tissue; fluids given by the oral and hypodermic routes are absorbed more slowly than those given intravenously.

FAQs

Does fluid replacement always mean an intravenous drip?

Not according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Its cholera guidance says some people who are severely dehydrated may require fluids through an IV, and that they should still drink oral rehydration solution as soon as possible. In that guidance, intravenous fluids are one route kept for severe cases. This reports the CDC's statement about cholera and is not medical advice.

  • Treats: Acute Kidney Injury, Acute kidney injury
Intravenous crystalloid is recommended as the first line therapy to prevent or to treat acute kidney injury (AKI) when compared to colloids as colloids increases the risk of AKI. 4% human albumin may be used in cirrhotic patients with spontaneous bacterial peritonitis as it can reduce the rate of kidney failure and improve survival.
