Vaginectomy is surgery to remove all or part of the vagina. It is one form of treatment for vaginal cancer or rectal cancer, used to remove tissue containing cancerous cells, and can also be used in gender-affirming surgery. If the uterus and ovaries are left in place, the operation leaves a canal and opening suitable for draining menstrual discharge; otherwise a hysterectomy must also be performed, and the vaginal lining must be thoroughly removed, to avoid the danger of menstrual discharge being retained within the body. Vaginectomy has also been performed in other animals to treat vaginal cancer.
