Protollin is a drug that was first formulated as a vaccine adjuvant, a substance that strengthens the immune response to a vaccine. It is composed of lipopolysaccharides derived from the bacteria Shigella flexneri or Plesiomonas shigelloides, combined with hydrophobic outer membrane proteins derived from Neisseria meningitidis. On 16 November 2021, Brigham and Women's Hospital announced that it was beginning a phase I clinical trial of Protollin as a nasally delivered vaccine meant to activate the body's immune response against the amyloid proteins that form in the brain and are thought to contribute to the symptoms of Alzheimer's disease. It remains an investigational product. Nothing here is medical advice.
