Robert Koch Institute

Also Known As Royal Prussian Institute for Infectious Diseases · RKI
Biomedical Research Institutes

Germany's federal public-health and infectious-disease research institute, founded in Berlin on 1 July 1891 as the Royal Prussian Institute for Infectious Diseases, with the bacteriologist Robert Koch as its first director until 1904. It grew directly out of Koch's own bacteriological research establishing the causative agents of anthrax, tuberculosis and cholera, and moved to its present headquarters on Nordufer in Berlin-Wedding in 1900. Today it operates as an upper federal agency under Germany's Federal Ministry of Health, responsible for infectious-disease control, epidemiology and public-health research.

The Rival Who Built His Own Institute

This article records tradition as it has been passed down and reported. Its sources are not yet part of the atlas's verified catalogue.

Robert Koch spent his career proving, one disease at a time, what Louis Pasteur had also spent his career proving from the other side of a national border: that specific microorganisms cause specific diseases. Koch established the causative agents of anthrax, tuberculosis and cholera, and formalized the criteria still used today for linking a microbe to a disease, known as Koch's postulates. The relationship between Koch and Pasteur was never simple collegiality. Historians describe both real personal and national rivalry, sharpened by the politics of the era following the Franco-Prussian War, alongside genuine scientific complementarity: their separate bodies of work together built modern germ theory. In 1891 Koch became the first director of a new Berlin institute built specifically for infectious disease research, the Royal Prussian Institute for Infectious Diseases, later renamed in his own honor as the Robert Koch Institute. It stands today as Germany's federal public health and infectious disease research agency, the institutional legacy of a rivalry that pushed two men, and two nations, toward the same discovery.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where was the Robert Koch Institute first housed, and when did it move to its Berlin-Wedding headquarters?

It began in 1891 in a converted house in Berlin-Mitte and moved to Nordufer in Wedding in 1900.

The Royal Prussian Institute for Infectious Diseases took up its work on 1 July 1891 in a converted residential building in Schumannstrasse in Berlin-Mitte, with Robert Koch as its director until 1904. In 1900 it relocated to a new building on the Nordufer in Berlin-Wedding, which the institute's own history says remains its headquarters to this day.
