Spina bifida is a congenital condition in which the spinal column does not close completely around the developing spinal cord during early pregnancy. Its severity ranges from a mild form that causes no symptoms to more serious forms that can cause leg weakness, bladder and bowel dysfunction, and fluid buildup in the brain. Adequate folic acid intake before and during early pregnancy is well established to reduce the risk of the condition.
