Bernhard Sigmund Schultze

Obstetricians, Gynecologists and Pediatric Specialists

Bernhard Sigmund Schultze (29 December 1827 to 17 April 1919), sometimes spelled Bernhard Sigismund Schultze, was a German obstetrician and gynecologist born in Freiburg im Breisgau. He was the younger brother of the anatomist Max Schultze and the son of Karl August Sigismund Schultze. He took his medical doctorate at the University of Greifswald in 1851 and became a lecturer on anatomy and physiology there in 1853. He then assisted Dietrich Wilhelm Heinrich Busch at the University Women's Hospital in Berlin and in 1858 moved to the University of Jena as chair of the gynecological clinic; he served as rector of the university in 1864 and 1865. His name is attached to Schultze's method, a resuscitation technique for an apparently stillborn child, and to several eponyms including Schultze's fold and Schultze's placenta. His writings include a textbook of midwifery from 1860 and a 1884 work on midwifery and puerperal fever. His son Leonhard Schultze-Jena became an explorer and zoologist.
