Carl Hueter was a German surgeon, born in Marburg in November 1838 and dead in May 1882, the son of the obstetrician Karl Christoph Hueter. He began medical study at sixteen, trained in Berlin, Vienna, England and Paris, and researched human joint anatomy in Paris between 1861 and 1863. After serving as assistant to Bernhard von Langenbeck in Berlin he succeeded Gustav Simon at Rostock in 1868 and became professor of surgery at Greifswald in 1870, where he was rector in 1877. His Klinik der Gelenkkrankheiten of 1870 was a highly regarded work on joint disease and orthopedics. With Georg Albert Lucke he founded the Deutsche Zeitschrift fur Chirurgie. The Hueter-Volkmann law of bone growth, shared with Richard von Volkmann, bears his name, and he is credited with coining the term hallux valgus in 1871.
