Frederick Banting led the University of Toronto team that isolated insulin in 1921 and 1922, working with medical student Charles Best in physiologist John Macleod's laboratory and with biochemist James Collip's purification method. The team's extract reversed fatal diabetic comas within weeks of first clinical use, and Banting shared the 1923 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with Macleod, controversially splitting his own prize money with Best in protest at Best's exclusion.
