John Sibley was an American physician, Indian agent, politician and planter. After serving as a surgeon's mate in the American Revolutionary War, he practised medicine in Massachusetts and North Carolina before moving to Natchitoches, Louisiana, after the Louisiana Purchase of 1803. President Thomas Jefferson appointed him a contract surgeon at the army post there, and from 1805 until his dismissal in 1814 he was Indian agent for the Orleans Territory. He later served as a parish judge, militia officer and member of the Louisiana State Senate, and ran farming and commercial businesses including cotton planting and salt manufacturing. This entry rests on one encyclopedia article and records only what it states.
