Madhava-kara

Traditional and Historical Medicine Practitioners

Madhava, also called Madhava-kara, was an Indian Ayurveda practitioner of the seventh or early eighth century who wrote the Rug-vinischaya, also known as the Madhava Nidana, a work that soon came to hold a position of authority. In its 79 chapters he lists diseases along with their causes, symptoms and complications, and he included a chapter on smallpox, called masurika in the text. The lead of the cited source gives only the period in which he lived, not birth or death dates, so none is recorded here. This entry records what was held and done and is not medical advice.
