Nikolai Amosov (1913 to 2002), also known as Mykola Amosov, was a Soviet and Ukrainian doctor of Russian origin who worked as a heart surgeon, inventor and best selling author. Born to peasants in the Novgorod region, he served as a surgeon at the front in the Second World War, then moved to Kyiv, where from 1952 he led a clinic of thoracic surgery. He received the Lenin Prize in 1961 for lung surgery and turned his focus to the heart, becoming in 1955 the first in Ukraine to treat heart disease surgically and in 1963 the first in the Soviet Union to replace a mitral valve. He is credited with an early artificial heart valve prosthesis and an original heart-lung machine. His 1965 book The Thoughts and the Heart sold millions of copies.
