Samuel Sharp (surgeon)

Surgeons and Perioperative Specialists

Samuel Sharp (about 1709 to 1778) was an English surgeon and author, a Fellow of the Royal Society, who served as surgeon at Guy's Hospital in London from 1733 to 1757 and became internationally famous. Apprenticed for seven years to William Cheselden in 1724, he spent part of his training in France and gained a knowledge of French surgery that served him well. His A Treatise on the Operations of Surgery, first published in 1739, was the first British study to focus exclusively on operative technique. He also gave anatomical and surgical lectures that grew into William Hunter's Great Windmill Street school, published A Critical Enquiry into the Present State of Surgery in 1754, and after retiring from Guy's in 1757 wrote Letters from Italy, which appeared in 1766.
