Ugo Cerletti was an Italian neurologist and psychiatrist who, with his assistant Lucio Bini, developed electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) at Sapienza University of Rome. Cerletti had observed pigs stunned with an electric current before slaughter and wondered whether a similar, controlled shock could induce a therapeutic seizure in psychiatric patients without the harder-to-control dosing of the injected convulsive drugs then in use. He and Bini administered the first ECT treatment to a human patient on 11 April 1938.
