Vincenz Czerny (1842 to 1916) was a German Bohemian surgeon whose main contributions were in oncological and gynecological surgery. Born in Trutnov in Bohemia, he studied at Prague and Vienna, worked as an assistant to Theodor Billroth, directed the clinic at Freiburg from 1871 and became professor at Heidelberg in 1877. In 1906 he founded the Institute for Experimental Cancer Research, a forerunner of the German Cancer Research Center, with a small hospital for cancer patients. He developed operations for cancer, performed the first open partial nephrectomy for renal carcinoma in 1887 and the first total vaginal hysterectomy in 1879, devised a radical hernia operation, and published an early account of a breast implant in 1895. He presided over the German Society of Surgery in 1901 and the International Surgical Congress in 1908.
