A professional membership body and registered charity in London, founded by royal charter of King Henry VIII on 23 September 1518 at the urging of physician-scholar Thomas Linacre, its first president, making it the oldest medical college in England. Its founding charter empowered physicians to license qualified practitioners and prosecute unlicensed ones in and around London, powers extended to all of England by a 1523 Act of Parliament. Today it represents around 40,000 physicians worldwide from offices in London and Liverpool.
