Otolaryngology
Origin Dr. Hal Foster called the first meeting of what became the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery in 1896; Head and Neck Surgery was added to the name in 1980.

The specialty concerned with diseases and surgery of the ear, nose, throat and related structures of the head and neck, commonly known as ENT. In the United States its organizational history is intertwined with ophthalmology, sharing a single founding academy from 1896 and splitting into fully independent professional bodies only in 1979. The modern discipline gained Head and Neck Surgery formally in its name in 1980, reflecting its expansion into head and neck oncologic and reconstructive surgery.
