A B52 is an intramuscular injection combining three medications, diphenhydramine, haloperidol and lorazepam, used to treat agitation. Haloperidol blocks dopamine receptors to relieve agitation, lorazepam enhances GABA inhibitory action to relieve anxiety and cause sedation, and diphenhydramine adds sedation while reducing the risk of extrapyramidal side effects from the haloperidol.
