Botulinum toxin therapy is the medical and cosmetic use of botulinum toxin, a neurotoxic protein produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum, administered in a strongly diluted form. The toxin works by blocking the release of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine at the neuromuscular junction, producing temporary, localized muscle paralysis. This mechanism is used therapeutically to treat conditions such as muscle spasticity, certain eye disorders, excessive sweating and migraines, and cosmetically to reduce the visible appearance of facial wrinkles.
