Drug detoxification is medical intervention for physical drug dependence, withdrawal syndromes and acute overdose. The name is somewhat contradictory, since excretion of a drug from the body is itself one of the processes that leads to withdrawal, meaning the withdrawal syndrome arises largely from the cessation of use and the drug's absence from the body rather than from any toxin buildup.
