A pastille is a type of sweet or medicinal pill made from a thick liquid that has been solidified, meant to be consumed by light chewing or by dissolving slowly in the mouth. In medical use, one form is the troche, a medicated lozenge that dissolves like a sweet. Historically, pastilles were pill-shaped lumps of compressed herbs burnt to release their medicinal properties; in oral form, the dissolving substance is absorbed gradually through the mucous membranes of the mouth or through the gastrointestinal tract.
