Transdermal describes a drug delivery method in which active ingredients, typically applied as a patch or ointment, are carried across the skin into the bloodstream for a systemic effect rather than a purely local one. The skin's outer layer, the stratum corneum, blocks roughly 90 percent of transdermal drug applications, and drugs that do cross it travel either directly through skin cells or, more commonly though less directly, through the spaces between them.
