A depot injection, also known as a long acting injectable, is an injectable formulation of a medication that releases slowly over time, permitting less frequent dosing and designed to increase medication adherence, especially for patients who commonly forget to take their medicine. Depot formulations can be created by modifying the drug molecule itself, as with prodrugs, or by modifying how it is administered, as with oil or lipid suspensions, and can have a duration of action of one month or longer; they are available for many types of drugs, including antipsychotics and hormones.
