An intrathecal pump is an implanted medical device that delivers medication directly into the intrathecal space, the fluid-filled space between the spinal cord and its surrounding protective sheath, through a catheter. Delivering a drug such as baclofen or an analgesic directly into this space allows a much smaller dose to reach the spinal cord than would be needed by mouth or vein, since the medication bypasses the rest of the body.
