Antiemetic therapy is treatment with an antiemetic, a drug effective against vomiting and nausea. It is used to treat motion sickness and to manage nausea caused by other treatments, including opioid pain relievers, general anesthetics and cancer chemotherapy, and it can also help patients with severe gastroenteritis, particularly when dehydration is a concern. Some antiemetics once thought to carry a risk of birth defects have since been shown to be safe for pregnant women and are used to manage morning sickness and the more severe condition hyperemesis gravidarum.
