Management of Crohn's Disease

Management of Crohn's disease involves first treating the acute symptoms of the disease and then maintaining remission. Because Crohn's disease is an immune system condition, it cannot be cured by medication or surgery, so treatment initially uses medications to control infections and reduce inflammation. Surgery may be required for complications such as obstructions, fistulae or abscesses, or when the disease does not respond to drugs within a reasonable time, and typically involves removing the affected part of the intestine and reconnecting the healthy sections, though the disease often returns even after surgery.
