Catholicon (Electuary)

Historical and Premodern Treatment Practice

In pre-modern medicine, a catholicon was a soft electuary, a medicinal paste, so named because it was supposedly universal in its curative and preventive abilities, or a purger of all the body's humours. It represents the all-purpose remedies that pre-modern medical practice offered, reflecting the humoral theory that framed medicine before the modern era.
