Radithor was a radioactive patent medicine brand of distilled water containing at least 1 microcurie of each of the radium-226 and radium-228 isotopes, sold in half-ounce bottles as a health tonic. In 1932 the illness and death of business magnate Eben Byers was unambiguously linked to his heavy use of Radithor, an episode that led to the collapse of the wider radium health fad and to stronger regulatory control of pharmaceutical and radioactive products in the United States.
