The Heimler Method of Human Social Functioning, sometimes referred to simply as the Heimler Method, is a form of psychotherapy that uses a patient's own language and thought forms to help them find their own solutions. It was developed by Eugene Heimler from his work in the United Kingdom's National Health Service in the late 1950s and early 1960s, drawing on his earlier experience surviving Nazi concentration camps during the Second World War; Heimler formulated a distinct counseling structure alongside a questionnaire called the Heimler Scale of Social Functioning. The method suits focused, short-term, goal- and action-oriented work and can be used across diverse patient groups, by a variety of professional disciplines, one-to-one, with couples, or with groups, including counseling at all levels, supervision, staff support and both formal and informal meetings.
