Chronotherapy is a behavioral treatment that attempts to move a person's bedtime and rising time later and later each day, around the clock, until they are sleeping on a normal schedule. It can be used by people with delayed sleep phase disorder, a circadian rhythm sleep disorder characterized by a mismatch between a person's internal biological clock and societal norms, who generally cannot reset their circadian rhythm by moving their bedtime and rising time earlier. Chronotherapy makes use of the human phase response to light or melatonin, and the American Academy of Sleep Medicine has recommended it for the treatment of circadian rhythm and sleep disorders.
