Transcranial Pulsed Ultrasound

Psychotherapy and Behavioral Therapy

Transcranial pulsed ultrasound uses low intensity, low frequency ultrasound to stimulate the brain. The idea that this method could have therapeutic value was first proposed by Alexander Bystritsky in 2002, and beginning in 2008 a research team led by William Tyler at Arizona State University investigated it as a noninvasive form of neuromodulation that avoids the risks of the implanted electrodes used in techniques such as deep brain stimulation or vagus nerve stimulation. The technique stimulates neuron activity and can manipulate brain waves from an external source, with proposed uses in both medicine and military science, though as a young technology it still lacks a complete understanding of its safety.
