Reparenting is a psychotherapeutic approach developed within transactional analysis in which the therapist seeks to provide corrective emotional experiences intended to address the effects of adverse or dysfunctional early caregiving. Different forms of reparenting have been developed since the late 1960s, varying in the degree to which the therapist assumes a parental role during treatment; the approach is based on transactional analysis theory and has primarily been associated with practitioners in that tradition, and claims regarding its effectiveness, particularly in treating severe mental disorders such as schizophrenia, remain controversial and have not achieved broad acceptance in mainstream clinical psychology or psychiatry.
