Origin The American Urological Association was founded 22 February 1902; its flagship Journal of Urology was founded in 1917 by Hugh Hampton Young.

The surgical specialty dealing with diseases of the urinary tract in both sexes and the male reproductive system, covering kidneys, ureters, bladder, urethra, adrenal glands, and prostate and testes. It descends from ancient lithotomy practice but organized as a modern specialty in the United States at the turn of the twentieth century, when genito-urinary surgeons split from general surgery.
