Derek McMinn is a British orthopaedic surgeon and inventor who practised in Birmingham, United Kingdom. He developed one of the successful modern metal-on-metal hip resurfacing systems, together with the instruments and surgical technique needed to implant it, and began performing hip resurfacing in 1991 with the McMinn Resurfacing made by Corin. Hip resurfacing is a bone-conserving, less invasive alternative to total hip replacement for young patients with severe hip arthritis, who tended to need early revision when given conventional replacements with polyethylene bearings; the thin metal surfaces and large diameter heads match the patient's own anatomy and wear at a much lower rate when well made and well implanted. McMinn also invented several other prostheses for the hip and knee and wrote the book Modern Hip Resurfacing, published in 2009.
