A transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt, usually abbreviated TIPS, is an artificial channel created within the liver that connects the portal vein to the hepatic vein. It is used to treat portal hypertension, a condition that frequently causes life-threatening bleeding from the esophagus and the buildup of fluid in the abdomen known as ascites.
