Hans Finsterer (1877 to 1955) was an Austrian surgeon, born on 24 June 1877 in Weng im Innkreis and died in Vienna on 4 November 1955. He is known for the Hofmeister-Finsterer operation, a partial gastrectomy. Franz von Hofmeister devised the procedure, building on an earlier operation by Eugen Pólya, and Finsterer refined it, so that it became known as the Hofmeister-Finsterer gastrectomy. In this operation the upper part of the cut end of the stomach is closed and the remaining lower portion is joined to the jejunum. The sources consulted give no further detail of his training or career, so this entry records only his place in the history of stomach surgery, and a fuller account remains to be written from additional sources.
