Ludwig Wullstein (1864 to 1930) was a German surgeon born in Leopoldshall who died in Essen. He studied medicine at Leipzig, Würzburg and Berlin, was a member of the Corps Rhenania Würzburg from 1888, received the title of professor in 1908 and in 1913 became chief physician at the Bergmannsheil, a miners' hospital in Bochum. Around the turn of the twentieth century he demonstrated a method of treating scoliosis by forcible correction, using plaster of Paris jackets applied with the patient in an improved position under considerable traction and lateral pressure, and he reported positive results in experiments on scoliotic dogs. With the surgeon Max Wilms he wrote the textbook Lehrbuch der Chirurgie, published in 1908 and 1909 and reaching a seventh edition in 1923, which was translated into several languages.
