Cervical cerclage, also known as a cervical stitch, is a treatment for cervical weakness, in which the cervix starts to shorten and open too early in a pregnancy, causing a late miscarriage or preterm birth. In women with a prior spontaneous preterm birth carrying one baby, whose cervical length has shortened below 25 millimeters, a cerclage prevents preterm birth and reduces the risk of death or illness in the baby.
