The Pomeroy procedure is a surgical technique for tubal ligation in which a loop of each fallopian tube is tied off and the looped segment is cut away, most often performed immediately after childbirth. Named for the gynecologist Ralph Pomeroy, it is one of the most common methods of partial bilateral salpingectomy used to sterilize a woman who does not wish to become pregnant again. Long-term studies of the technique put the ten-year pregnancy rate at about 7.5 per 1,000 procedures and the ectopic pregnancy rate at about 1.5 per 1,000, making it one of the more reliable sterilization methods available.
